The right stick is the usual pitch, roll and yaw. The left stick handles thrusters with quite fine control, making docking a breeze: Y-axis: Forward/reverse thrusters. X-axis: Side thrusters. RZ-axis: Vertical thrusters. Throttle: % throttle. The throttle acts like cruise control, and also for supercruise.
Joystick Gremlin and vJoy. Currently Star Citizen handles controller setups quite badly and even after they fix it (it’s alpha, so they’ll get to it at some point), it might never be enough for more complicated setups. That’s why many people with more advanced setups use some extra software. I’m using three programs for my control setup:
Also known as a hand-on-stick-and-stick (HOSAS) setup, I found that it completely changed the flight experience in both Star Citizen’s Persistent Universe and Elite Dangerous. Explaining the
Select the “Input” tab at the top of your screen. Choose “Customize Controls.”. Open the drop-down menu in the “Select Preset” field. Select your HOTAS device. If the game doesn’t automatically recognize your HOTAS device, you’ll have to choose Keyboard, Gamepad, or Empty, then manually map your controls. Select “Input Method
Dec 11, 2020. #2. Most throttles are essentially single axis joysticks turned sideways. There are very few mapping changes you'd have to make between a HOTAS and HOSAS to get an acceptable experienceother than binding the addition axes sensibly.
I am also a 60+yo Commander and do not have my Warthog HOTAS fully sorted for Elite Dangerous either, mainly because it is so much more complex than using an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. However The latest Thrustmaster Warthog Drivers, Firmware, Software and TARGET Profile for Elite Dangerous are actually here:
I know some do use HOTAS for X4, and would recommend the official Egosoft forums if you want advice or example configs. I use HOTAS (Thrust master Throttle+ Stick) for Elite Dangerous, for context. Edit: For clarity, I do not see much difference between HOSAS and HOTAS. HOSAS is closer to a game pad perhaps so may be slightly better with X3/X4
With a stick you have to apply constant force to maintain your thrust on the same level, while the Throttle on a Hotas stays at the same level of thrust without any force. Thx, I went with a 2nd 3DX, I never touched a HOSTAS before and dont want to deal with sending it back if its too cheap feeling.
Elite Dangerous brings gaming’s original open world adventure to the modern generation with a stunning recreation of the entire Milky Way galaxy. Here battles rage, governments fall, and humanity’s frontier expands – and you can impact it all. Welcome to the definitive massively multiplayer space epic. 340K. 536.
What you want is a HOSAS setup (dual joystick), and for 100$ you wont be able to afford ONE recommended joystick. You can get a cheap set of T16000 (aptly called T16000 duo) for about 130, but they are known to have issues and require a bit of work to make them work well for long. You may want a HOTAS setup too.
